How Fashion Trends Are Actually Predicted

Trend forecasting has an image problem. It sounds either mystical or arbitrary, and both readings are wrong.
In practice it is closer to reading a market than reading tea leaves — a slow accumulation of small observations until a pattern becomes undeniable.
The Shift
The old model was top-down: a handful of houses decided, everyone else followed, and forecasting meant watching four cities. That model has broken. Consumers now adopt, reject and remix on a timeline the runway does not control.
Contemporary forecasting therefore reads two streams at once: what designers propose, and what people are already choosing without being asked to.
What We're Seeing
A direction only qualifies as a trend when it clears three tests. It appears across designers who share no aesthetic. It survives translation into a commercial price point. And it answers a mood that already exists rather than inventing one.
Most runway ideas fail at least one of those tests, which is why so few of them reach a wardrobe.

- A plausible commercial route from couture to mid-market.
- Alignment with how people are actually living and spending.
Why It Matters
For brands, buyers and creative teams, the value of a forecast is not the prediction itself but the reasoning behind it. A direction you understand can be adapted; a direction you copy can only be followed.
